The animation below is comprised of a series of photographs taken on May 12, 1998 by the 16 inch Near Earth Orbit instrument affixed to the Hubble Space Telescope ancillary instrument package.  The photographs were enhanced by scientists at the US Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA as part of a study designed to locate areas where frozen water is likely to be found beneath the barren lunar crust.  When the lunar surface is viewed in near-infrared, at the exact peak of lunar noon, a remarkable image emerges from the shadows
On 12/09/98, NASA issued a press release stating that the image is merely an optical illusion caused by the interplay of light and shadow on the lunar surface.  We here at The Church of Phil disagree.  You be the judge.
